A new start in snowy Chicago.

Well, after a year working at a Minneapolis agency, I now find myself in Chicago, sans job, on the snowiest winter in a long time. All in all, I'm more excited than not. I've always wanted to live in a larger city, and now here I am.

In recent news, I've posted a new project in my portfolio, and have found my favorite new breakfast spot thus far. That, combined with the fact that I've already eaten cuisines not represented in the Twin Cities, means I'm a happy person.

A "Nation" of Design: The Art of Stefan Kanchev.

Recently, through a friend on twitter, I happened upon the Tribute site of a Bulgarian Graphic Artist by the name of Stefan Kanchev. Kanchev, born in 1915, was an artist of such skill that he was granted the honorary title "National Artist" of Bulgaria. And no lie, It's beautiful.

Last night, the much anticipated movie Art & Copy debuted in Minneapolis at the Oak Street Cinema. Being that the advertising industry seems to be the sector I'm chugging along in, I thought it'd be a fun experience to catch it while it was here. It helps that I'm a sucker for creative industry documentaries (as was the case with another recent doc, The September Issue).

Hopping over for a quick drink and what seemed like ENDLESS amounts of popcorn at Sally's in East Bank (Hey, it was free, and Nikki Will is a terrible influence) we hit the theater to find it full but not packed. Sat through a quick intro from a Creative Director at Atomic Playpen, and right into the movie.

Well, unsurprisingly, I liked it alot. As much as the great ads of a few decades past were making the book, they were also breaking the book. Sound familiar? As it should. Look at digital and the stand-out ads of today. Advertising is all about breaking the book.

I'm surprised we even have any book left to break.

...Poor book.
